In the wake of Hurricane Katrina in the USA in August 2005, the song has been used as a combined effort to raise funds for the two global tragedies. The following artists have participated: Celine Dion, The Game, Joss Stone, John Legend, Wyclef Jean, Mya, JoJo, Rueben Studdard, Patti Labelle, Gavin Degraw, Anthony Hamilton, Natalie Cole, Stacie Orrico, Kelly Price, Chingy, Jesse Macartney, The Backstreet Boys, Aaron Carter, Anthony Hamilton, Angie Stone, Lee Ryanand Glenn Lewis. The track was being produced by Mark J. Feist and Damon Sharpe (Destiny's Child, Jennifer Lopez, Mya.) Top musicians have offered their time to play on the track: Steve Lukather on guitar, Abe Laborial, Jr. on drums and Greg Phillinganes on acoustic grand piano. The strings were arranged and conducted by Bill Meyers. The song was mixed by legendary mix engineer Jon Gass. The song is released on Monday, October 17, 2005 during a press conference in Hollywood.
All proceeds from the song will benefit Hurricane Katrina/Tsunami relief. Rebuilding the damage is a journey that will take a long time and the intent is to establish revenue that will continue past the release of the single.
They have documented all the stages of production for the music video and a making of DVD that will also be sold and given to the Charity. Both will be directed by music video and feature film director Bille Woodruff.
The Come Together Foundation is a newly constituted (501 3c) charity with the purpose of collecting all monies raised from the album, DVD and all related merchandising and broadcast rights. The Foundation will distribute the funds to the appropriate charities working in the region.

During the recording of his album Refaire le monde, Marc Dupré asked to Celine the permission to cover the song and record it; the mother-in-law accepted at once.
